Be Careful in Winter! Common Diseases in Children

In the winter season, some diseases are common in adults and children, especially in children. These diseases, which are triggered both by seasonal effects and by being indoors in winter, can be listed as common cold, flu, pneumonia, tonsil infections, bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis media, and rotavirus infection. While the main cause of some of these diseases can be stated as the winter season, environmental and bodily factors can affect both the occurrence and severity of the diseases.

The Most Common Winter Diseases in Children in Winter: Cold and Flu

The most common illness in children during the winter season is the common cold. A cold is a disease that starts with a runny nose. In addition to being confused with the flu, although the symptoms are similar, flu and cold are two different diseases. The common cold is a viral infection that occurs in the upper respiratory tract. In children, the effects are usually seen as headache and sore throat, cough, fever, stuffy and runny nose, and malaise. In the case of a cold, most children become restless. In the treatment of common cold with medication, appropriate temperature should be provided for the child and nutritional supplements should be made to increase body resistance.

Support should be sought when signs of tonsil infection are seen. It is not a disease that families can overcome on their own.

Attention to Bronchitis, Middle Ear Inflammation and Sinusitis

Protecting children from environmental effects in winter also protects them from bronchitis, which is bronchial inflammation. Bronchitis is a bacterial or viral disease that usually occurs after the flu. It causes fever, cough, weakness and sometimes breathing difficulties in the child. It is very important for children to take fresh air and consume plenty of fluids in bronchitis. Although otitis media is not actually a winter-specific disease in children, it is mentioned in this category because it is seen after the cold and flu in winter. The main cause of inflammation is the short Eustachian tube. The disease is caused by bacteria. It can cause fever, ear pain and hearing loss. Sinusitis is one of the most common diseases in children during the winter season. Sinusitis is a condition of infection of the sinus cavities in the head. It causes nasal congestion, fever, headache, post-nasal drip and cough.
