Nutrition After Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is an endoscopic, medical method used in the diagnosis of all diseases of the intestine, starting from the entrance of the small intestine and ending at the end of the anus. Colonoscopy is performed by entering the large intestine with a camera. It has an important place especially in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and polyps. Polyps are visualized through colonoscopy, and biopsy is also performed by taking a piece of the polyp. Colonoscopy, which is a more effective and reliable method compared to other methods, is also used for treatment purposes. During the colonoscopy procedure, your large intestine should be completely empty for a clear image. Therefore, the day before the colonoscopy, you need to apply a diet and a medicine that will empty your large intestine.

Nutrition After Colonoscopy

Nutrition after colonoscopy is as important as the nutrition before the application. Since the colonoscopy application is made from the anus of the patient, they should be careful about the nutrition after the procedure. Especially in the first days after colonoscopy, lighter, low-fat, easy-to-digest foods should be consumed. Not consuming bitter, sour, spicy and heavy meals for a few days will accelerate the recovery process after colonoscopy. In the first days, as before colonoscopy, low-fiber foods should be preferred. Especially in the first two days, liquid and semi-solid nutrition is required. Dehydration may develop after the procedure due to the drugs used during bowel cleansing and other reasons. To prevent this, the patient should frequently consume water and prefer liquid foods after colonoscopy. Otherwise, many symptoms may develop. In the first few days, consumption of foods that may cause dehydration such as tea and coffee should be minimized.

To prevent gas formation after colonoscopy, acidic and carbonated drinks should be avoided on the first day after the application. Gas-producing vegetables and legumes should not be in the diet plan. During the transition to solid nutrition, you can start consuming eggs, fish and boiled chicken. By consuming mashed potatoes with meals, you can increase the amount of calories taken in the meal without having a tolerance problem.
